ABP Humber welcomes Steven Clapperton as head of marine

Associated British Ports is pleased to announce the appointment of Steven Clapperton as the new head of marine for the Humber region. Steven joins ABP from the Port of London Authority, where he served as director of marine operations for the past three years. With over 30 years of experience in the maritime industry, Steven brings a wealth of expertise to lead ABP’s Marine team in Humber, which includes over 300 professionals, among them the Humber Marine Pilots.

Before joining the PLA, Steven held the position of maritime director and Harbour Master at the Port of Tyne. He has also had an extensive seagoing career and worked as a harbour pilot, gaining valuable experience in marine consultancy, including a secondment to an international oil major.

Simon Bird, regional director at ABP Humber, expressed his enthusiasm for Steven’s appointment: “We’re delighted to welcome Steven to the Humber. He brings a wealth of experience to the role, having been a pilot and a Master Mariner. With his strong background in port management, it’s great to appoint him in the Humber, the UK’s busiest port complex. His leadership and knowledge are essential for overseeing shipping movements in this critical trading estuary, where 17 percent of the UK’s seaborne trade passes through our ports. I also want to thank Fred Firman, who has admirably covered the role since Paul Bristowe was appointed chief of staff.”

Steven Clapperton shared his excitement about the new role: “I am thrilled to be joining ABP as head of Marine Humber, especially as we move forward with our five-year strategic plan. I am committed to fostering a safety-led culture and working collaboratively to ensure our decisions reflect our core values. I’m looking forward to meeting our customers and stakeholders, collaborating with my new colleagues, and working together to deliver safe, efficient, and cost-effective marine operations that contribute to ABP’s missions of Keeping Britain Trading and Enabling the Energy Transition.”

Steven is also actively involved in voluntary roles, including serving as a Trustee of the Tyne Rivers Trust and being a member of the board of the Guild of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology. A Master Mariner and Associate Fellow of the Nautical Institute, he is a passionate advocate for seafarers’ welfare and the health of the UK’s rivers.
