Álex Garcia i Formatjé appointed general manager of the Port Authority of Barcelona
The board of directors of the Port of Barcelona has approved the appointment of Álex Garcia i Formatjé as the new general manager of the Port Authority. A Civil Engineer with a Master’s degree in Port Engineering and Management from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and an Executive MBA from Esade Business School, Garcia i Formatjé brings nearly 30 years of experience in port engineering and management, alongside a proven track record in leadership and strategic planning.
Garcia i Formatjé has held numerous roles in both technical and managerial capacities, excelling in port planning and operations as well as managing multidisciplinary teams dedicated to the development and planning of port spaces.
Throughout his career, Garcia i Formatjé has contributed to several major projects, starting his career with COPCISA and later working at the Port of Tarragona and SENER, Ingeniería y Sistemas, where he was involved in port civil engineering initiatives. In 2000, he joined the technical infrastructure department of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands, before assuming a leading role at the Port of Barcelona in September 2000, where he directed planning and management of the port area. Since 2007, he has served as deputy director general of Port Planning and operations, overseeing Planning, concessions, operations, and sustainability and environment.
Over his almost 25 years at the Port of Barcelona, Garcia i Formatjé has held directorial positions in several key companies, including CILSA, which manages the Logistics Activities Zone; MEPSA, responsible for the Energy dock; Creuers del Port de Barcelona, the operator of various cruise terminals; and more recently, Train Port Barcelona, a joint venture with ADIF to manage the railway logistics node of the metropolitan area of Barcelona.
Garcia i Formatjé’s deep technical expertise and operational management skills have been instrumental in transforming and optimising the Port of Barcelona’s infrastructure and services. His appointment as General Manager underscores the Port of Barcelona’s ongoing commitment to innovation, efficiency, and sustainable development, further strengthening its status as one of the leading ports in the Mediterranean and Southern Europe.
