ECOLOG and Tata Steel collaborate on a liquid hydrogen and CO2 corridor between Norway and Amsterdam

ECOLOG, in partnership with H2A partner Port of Amsterdam and Norwegian producer Gen2 Energy, has entered into an agreement with Tata Steel to explore the import and use of liquid hydrogen. This project involves the production of hydrogen in Norway using renewable hydropower. The hydrogen is liquefied for efficient transport and shipped to the Port of Amsterdam using specialised ECOLOG vessels. At the ECOLOG terminal in Amsterdam, the liquid hydrogen is converted back into its gaseous state and distributed to Tata Steel and other companies through a planned pipeline network.

Carbon Capture and Storage Initiative Tata Steel, committed to climate-neutral steel production, has also signed a second agreement involving ECOLOG, Horisont Energi, the Port of Amsterdam, OCAP, DNB, and ABN AMRO. This agreement aims to establish a CO2 corridor to transport carbon dioxide from Amsterdam to Norway. Even in advanced Green Steel production methods, a small amount of CO2 is still released. By capturing and storing this CO2, Tata Steel seeks to achieve near-zero emissions.

The process will involve capturing CO2 at Tata Steel and other regional companies. The conversion of liquid hydrogen to gas at ECOLOG’s terminal will release cold energy, which will be harnessed to liquefy the CO2. The liquefied CO2 will then be transported by ship to Horisont Energi’s import terminal in Norway for permanent storage. This integrated approach creates a dual-purpose liquid hydrogen and CO2 corridor, efficiently managing energy and enhancing sustainability.

Dutch-Norwegian Energy Collaboration These agreements build on a longstanding partnership between the Dutch and Norwegian governments in the energy sector. The working visit by King Willem-Alexander and Minister Hermans underscored this collaboration, focusing on hydrogen, CO2 storage, and related infrastructure. Establishing liquid hydrogen and CO2 corridors between the Port of Amsterdam and Norway marks a significant step in bolstering this partnership and contributes to shared goals of CO2 reduction and climate action.

Commitments of ECOLOG and Tata Steel ECOLOG specialises in the transportation of CO2 and liquid hydrogen and plays an essential role in advancing carbon capture, utilisation, and storage value chains, as well as LH₂ solutions. Their infrastructure is designed to support decarbonisation efforts and contribute to achieving a net-zero economy. Tata Steel Nederland, a leading European steel producer, is committed to producing zero-carbon steel by 2045. The company plans to transition from coal-based steel production to hydrogen-based methods, aligning with its vision for sustainable steelmaking.
