First consignment of acrylic acid leaves BPCL’s Kochi Refinery


BPCL has started coastal shipping of tank containers with two carrying acrylic acid from its Kochi Refinery to Hazira Port, Gujarat.

The containers were loaded on board SSL Visakhapatnam from the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT), Vallarpadam.

The first supplies of acrylic acid, which is used in hygienic medical products, detergents, and wastewater treatment chemicals, plastics, coatings, adhesives, elastomers, etc were made to Rossari Biotech and Visen Industries. In the next few weeks, production of Oxo Alcohols and Acrylates is also expected to commence.

Shri Vijayagopal, director of finance, BPCL, said: “Propylene Derivatives Petrochemical Complex at BPCL Kochi Refinery marks the first major endeavour in India, either in public or private sector, to produce Niche Petrochemicals which are predominantly being imported to the country. The Complex will result in savings of Rs.4000 Crore of valuable foreign exchange.”
