GTT wins tank design contract for 14 LNG carriers

Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) has secured a tank design contract from Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), its South Korean partner, for a series of new liquefied natural gas carriers (LNGCs).

Under the contract, the company will be responsible for the tank designs of 14 new LNGCs. Two of the ships are for an Asian shipowner, while the other 12 are for an American shipowner.

Each vessel will have a cargo capacity of 174,000m³ and incorporate the Mark III Flex membrane containment system developed by GTT.

The Mark III technology helps hold liquefied gas at low temperatures and atmospheric pressure during shipping as well as onshore and offshore storage.

Featuring a primary corrugated stainless-steel membrane and complete secondary membrane produced using composite material, the containment and insulation system is said to be directly supported by the hull structure of the vessel.

Facilitating mass production techniques and easy assembly, the modular system comprises prefabricated components that can support any tank shape and capacity.

GTT plans to deliver the new vessels between the fourth quarter of this year and the third quarter of 2026.

In May 2022, Bureau Veritas (BV) granted Approval in Principle (AiP) for GTT’s new ballast-free LNG bunker and feeder vessel, named Shear-Water.
