HIT and HKSTS welcome Wan Hai A18’s Maiden call to Hong Kong

On 7 April 2025, Hongkong International Terminals (HIT) and Hongkong Salvage & Towage Services (HKSTS) proudly welcomed the maiden call of the WAN HAI A18, Wan Hai Lines’ new 13,100-TEU container vessel, at HIT’s Berth 8 North.

The WAN HAI A18 is the eleventh ship in a series of thirteen 13,100-TEU containerships ordered from Samsung Heavy Industries since 2021. It marks a technological milestone as the first in the fleet to feature both a windshield and a shaft generator—design elements aimed at enhancing fuel efficiency and supporting sustainable shipping practices.

Measuring 335 metres in length and 51 metres in breadth, the WAN HAI A18 is set to operate on Wan Hai’s Asia to West Coast of South America (ASA) service. The vessel incorporates a number of energy-efficient features, including an advanced main engine and eco-friendly technologies. The bow-mounted windshield reduces wind resistance to boost fuel economy, while the shaft generator converts mechanical energy from the main engine into electrical power—further lowering fuel consumption and emissions.

A welcome ceremony was held to mark the vessel’s first call in Hong Kong, with key representatives from HIT, HKSTS, and Wan Hai Lines in attendance. Notable guests included Lawrence Yam, commercial director of South China Hutchison Ports; Raymond Lam, operations director of HIT; Angelina Lei, CEO of HK Salvage & Towage; Kelvin Kuang, general manager of operations of HIT; and Stephen Chan, general manager of HK Salvage & Towage.

The visit of the WAN HAI A18 underscores HIT and HKSTS’s continued commitment to supporting greener, more efficient maritime operations and fostering close collaboration with global shipping partners.
