HMM takes delivery of its first methanol-powered containership

HMM has taken delivery of ‘HMM GREEN’, a 9,000 TEU methanol-powered containership, marking the first of nine sister ships ordered in February 2023. The vessels were contracted from HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (seven vessels) and HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (two vessels) as part of HMM’s ongoing fleet expansion strategy.

Following this initial delivery, HMM is set to receive the remaining eight vessels by next year, further reinforcing its commitment to sustainable shipping.

HMM GREEN is scheduled to bunker bio-methanol at the Port of Shanghai. As a renewable fuel derived from waste resources, bio-methanol has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by up to 65 percent, eliminate sulfur oxide emissions, and cut nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 80 percent compared to conventional bunker fuel.

Additionally, all vessels in this series are equipped with advanced environmental technologies, ensuring compliance with major global port regulations. These features allow unrestricted operation across trade routes and ensure adherence to EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime regulations, aligning with the industry’s evolving emissions reduction targets.

An HMM official stated, “This new vessel delivery is expected to accelerate HMM’s goal of achieving ‘Net-Zero by 2045.’ To enhance our competitiveness, we will continue to explore and adopt various fuel options.”

HMM GREEN will be deployed on HMM’s independently operated FIM (Far East Asia, India, and the Mediterranean Sea) service, supporting the company’s ongoing efforts toward sustainable and efficient shipping.
