Mercitalia Intermodal, a subsidiary of Polo Logistica FS, has entered into a new agreement with PJM to enhance its fleet with advanced digital train functionalities. As part of the initiative, approximately 600 intermodal wagons will be upgraded with PJM’s WaggonTracker system during scheduled maintenance between 2025 and 2027.
The WaggonTracker system offers comprehensive monitoring capabilities, including speed tracking, running direction, geofencing, and wheelset performance management. Additionally, it features real-time brake and kingpin monitoring, as well as an IDDS derailment detection system. A local radio network within the train set enables secure real-time communication between wagons and train operators, using encrypted connections and open interfaces.

Designed to be fully compatible with future Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC) systems, the WaggonTracker system allows for seamless integration of customised applications. The technological innovation behind the system has been recognised with multiple awards, including the prestigious State Prize for Digitalisation.
Mercitalia Intermodal has been focused on digitalising its intermodal fleet for several years, aiming to balance cost-effectiveness, availability, and safety in rail logistics. The introduction of smart train functionalities will bring significant improvements, including:
- Reduced train preparation time
- Optimized asset management and predictive maintenance
- Increased reliability and operational efficiency
- Minimized repair costs through vehicle-friendly operation
- Enhanced safety measures
