ITCO’s work on extra-large tank container (ELTC) definitions

In a spring 2021 meeting, information document 23 raised the question of defining extra-large tank containers (ELTCs) separately from tank containers.

This is because ELTCs that are primarily used on rail are likely to be subject to RID regulatory provisions, which would then also impact on the typical tank container used by ITCO members.

One ITCO proposal is to define an ELTC as having a volume greater than 40,000 litres or MGM greater than 40,000 kg.

ITCO is welcoming thoughts from its members on this matter.
