Latest generation of ORBCOMM®’s dry container monitoring solution can detect unauthorised container access
ORBCOMM has unveiled the latest generation of its dry container IoT solution, engineered to enhance container security, safeguard cargo integrity, and boost asset visibility. This new technology enables shipping lines to monitor for potential fire risks, detect unauthorised container access, receive damage alerts, and provide elevated asset visibility to their customers.
Christian Allred, ORBCOMM’s general manager and senior vice president of Maritime IoT, commented, “Container fires, contraband, and container damage are growing problems and pose significant threats to shipping lines, shippers, and BCOs. That’s why in 2024, we will ship over one million dry container devices. Our solution makes dry containers smarter through advanced cargo protection, added container security, and improved visibility so that customers can reduce cargo risk, lower operational costs, increase asset longevity, and protect against claims.”
The solution is powered by ORBCOMM’s advanced CT 1010 monitoring device, which integrates sensor-based monitoring within the container. Time of flight and light sensors provide data on door openings and closings, while ambient temperature and infrared sensors monitor heat changes inside and outside the container. Motion, shock, and tamper sensors detect asset movement, impacts, and device removal. Enhanced solar power harvesting and power management optimise the frequency and amount of reporting. Data and alerts are accessible through ORBCOMM’s cloud-based platforms, available to crew via onboard vessel networks and to onshore users through APIs connected to customers’ and third-party systems.
