New Dam2Dam Shuttle connects ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam via sustainable rail connection

The port authorities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam have enhanced their collaboration by officially adding the Dam2Dam shuttle to the national network of Joint Corridors Off-Road. This new rail service provides an efficient and sustainable solution for container transport between the two port regions, supporting their shared goal of reducing the environmental impact of logistics.

The Dam2Dam shuttle is a freight train connection between the TMA terminal in the port of Amsterdam and various terminals in the port of Rotterdam. Transporting goods by rail offers significant advantages, with one freight train replacing approximately 100 trucks. This shift not only reduces traffic congestion but also significantly cuts CO2 emissions. The train service operates eight times a week at fixed schedules, enhancing the reliability of transport between the two ports.

This modal shift from road to rail represents a crucial step toward more sustainable freight transport. Both the Port of Amsterdam and the Port of Rotterdam are committed to reducing the ecological footprint of their logistics chains. Encouraging the use of rail transport contributes to this goal while also enhancing the efficiency and reliability of freight movement.

“We are pleased with this collaboration. With the Dam2Dam shuttle, we are taking an important step together with TMA Logistics and the Port of Rotterdam towards a future in which sustainable transport is the norm,” said Maurice Delattre of Port of Amsterdam.

Now that the Dam2Dam Shuttle has been officially included in the national network of Joint Corridors Off-Road, shippers interested in moving their freight from road to rail (or inland waterway) can apply for subsidies to support this transition.

With the slogan “Skip the lane, ship by train. Join the modal shift,” both port authorities are calling on the logistics sector to participate in this movement towards more sustainable transport. The Dam2Dam shuttle is a tangible example of how cooperation between ports and companies can lead to innovative solutions that contribute to a better future. By promoting rail transport, the Port of Amsterdam and the Port of Rotterdam are setting a precedent for the industry, demonstrating the value of collaborative efforts in achieving environmental sustainability in logistics.
