Ocean Technologies Group introduces biofouling management best practices e-learning
Ocean Technologies Group, a global leader in maritime human capital management and operational technologies, has launched a new e-learning title: Biofouling Management. This release addresses the growing need for effective biofouling control to ensure compliance and operational efficiency as regulatory scrutiny intensifies.
The launch comes at a crucial time, with many countries tightening their biofouling regulations. While the International Maritime Organisation’s guidelines on biofouling management are not mandatory, several states have introduced national laws that restrict access to their waters for ships with fouled hulls. This has resulted in some vessels being banned due to inadequate biofouling management.
Managing biofouling is not only important for regulatory compliance but also for reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. According to an IMO study on the Impact of Ships’ Biofouling on Greenhouse Gas Emissions, even a thin 0.5mm layer of slime on 50 percent of a ship’s hull can increase GHG emissions by 25-30 percent. By addressing biofouling, vessels can improve their Carbon Intensity Indicator rating, lower bunker costs, and contribute to global emission reduction targets.
Available through the Ocean Learning Platform, Biofouling Management offers an in-depth look at the factors contributing to biofouling and provides guidelines for maintenance procedures to reduce its build-up. The course emphasises the importance of having a biofouling management plan and maintaining a record book. It also covers the requirements for in-water inspections and how voyage duration and location affect the survival of invasive marine species.
“This new e-learning underscores the importance of robust biofouling management, which not only improves a vessel’s hydrodynamic performance, leading to reduced fuel consumption and emissions but also ensures compliance with evolving regulations and protects marine ecosystems,” said Knut Mikalsen, director of learning solutions at OTG.
Johan Gustafsson, chief revenue officer at OTG, highlighted the growing risks of inadequate biofouling management: “Countries like Australia and New Zealand have established stringent biofouling regulations. Vessels with poor biofouling records face entry restrictions unless proper cleaning and preventative measures are taken. Our new title is designed to guide customers in meeting these regulations and improving vessel performance.”
The Biofouling Management course offers essential knowledge to help maritime professionals stay compliant with biofouling regulations, optimise ship performance, and support environmental sustainability.
