PIL celebrates naming of LNG dual-fuel container vessel in Singapore in conjunction with SG60
Pacific International Lines marked a key milestone today with the naming ceremony of its newest 8,200 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessel, Kota Ocean, at PSA Terminal in Singapore. The event, held in conjunction with Singapore’s 60th anniversary of nation-building, highlights PIL’s continued commitment to sustainable, efficient and innovative maritime operations.
The vessel was named by Ms Ho Ching, chairman of Temasek Trust. Kota Ocean is the sixth LNG dual-fuel vessel in PIL’s growing fleet and the second in a series of four 8,200 TEU vessels within the “O” Class. These ships form a crucial component of PIL’s long-term fleet renewal programme aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.
Mr Lars Kastrup, CEO of PIL, expressed his gratitude, stating, “We are honoured to have Ms Ho Ching name Kota Ocean, a ship that represents a significant step in our journey to sustainable shipping. Hosting this ceremony during Singapore’s SG60 celebrations reinforces our deep-rooted connection to Singapore’s maritime heritage and future.”
He added, “Kota Ocean is the sixth LNG dual-fuel vessel delivered to our fleet, a testament to our ambition of being a responsible industry player. Since becoming the first Asian container line to invest in LNG dual-fuel ships in 2022, we have ordered 18 newbuild vessels to help us meet our net zero emissions goal by 2050, aligning with Singapore’s national targets.”
Assigned to PIL’s South West Africa service , Kota Ocean will operate on a trade route linking the Far East – including China and Singapore – with Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, and Ivory Coast. This connection strengthens trade corridors between Asia and Africa and supports regional economic development.
The vessel joins her sister ship, Kota Oasis, which was delivered in April 2025, and PIL’s four 14,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel vessels already in operation. Looking ahead, PIL has 12 additional vessels on order: two 8,200 TEU, five 13,000 TEU and five 9,000 TEU ships, all scheduled for delivery in the coming years.
PIL’s newbuilds are equipped with advanced environmental features, including the ability to operate on greener bio-methane fuels. Their engines incorporate the latest exhaust recycling technology, significantly reducing methane emissions. Further enhancements, such as full-spade type rudders with twisted leading edges, rudder bulbs, pre-swirl stators and optimised hydrodynamic hull forms with superior anti-fouling coatings, contribute to improved fuel efficiency.
Additionally, the vessels leverage digital technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things to enhance automation, operational safety and voyage planning through the company’s Centre for Maritime Efficiency.
Through these initiatives, PIL continues to build a future-ready fleet designed to deliver reliable, sustainable solutions for global trade, while creating long-term value for its customers, partners and stakeholders.
