Progress Rail signs contracts with Egyptian National Railways to modernize 100 locomotives and provide services support

Progress Rail, a global leader in rail technology and infrastructure, has signed three long-term contracts with Egyptian National Railways to modernise 100 AA22T locomotives and provide comprehensive technical services and parts support. The agreements, covering a total of 141 locomotives over a period of up to 15 years, are set to significantly boost locomotive availability for ENR and expand the operational capacity of Egypt’s rail network.

The signing ceremony took place in Cairo on 9 April, with ENR chairman Mohamed Abdel Aziz Amer and Progress Rail’s executive vice president for Locomotive, Jack Zhang, formalising the agreements. His Excellency Kamel Al Wazir, deputy prime minister for industrial development and minister of industry & transport, was also present to witness the occasion.

“This locomotive modernisation programme will extend the existing assets’ useful life by up to 20 years, while updating the control and engine systems to achieve significant fuel savings and reduced greenhouse gas emissions,” said Zhang. “Additionally, this project will further strengthen our long history of collaboration with ENR to support the nation’s transportation needs, enhance job opportunities, and introduce the latest technologies and components from the United States.”

ENR operates the largest transport network for passengers and freight in the region. With a longstanding presence in Egypt dating back to the 1950s, Progress Rail has powered or supplied much of ENR’s existing locomotive fleet. This latest agreement reflects both parties’ continued commitment to expanding that relationship through modernisation and in-country support.

The modernisation process involves upgrading critical components and integrating advanced technologies into the existing locomotives. By retaining the original car body and bogie frame, ENR will realise considerable cost savings compared to acquiring new locomotives, while still benefiting from the performance and efficiency of modern equipment.

These contracts will also enable the ENR workforce to build new capabilities, supported by Progress Rail’s technical and project expertise, ensuring long-term maintenance and operational efficiency. The collaboration marks another step forward in Egypt’s ongoing efforts to modernise its rail infrastructure and adopt more sustainable transport solutions.
