The Rotterdam-Singapore Green and Digital Shipping Corridor has achieved a significant milestone with the successful bunkering of mass-balanced liquefied bio-methane at the Port of Rotterdam on 19 October 2024. Shell supplied 100 tonnes of LBM to CMA CGM’s LNG-powered containership, CMA CGM TIVOLI, as part of the pilot project.
Advancing Maritime Decarbonisation
The LBM used in this pilot, derived from waste-based feedstock, represents a lower-emission alternative to traditional marine fuels. This initiative underscores the GDSC’s commitment to fostering near-zero-emission fuel adoption along one of the busiest global trade routes.
Shell provided a Proof of Sustainability certificate for the LBM, verifying compliance with the European Union’s regulations. The certification process will undergo third-party auditing accredited by International Sustainability and Carbon Certification-European Union.
Pilot Outcomes and Insights
The pilot employed the mass balance methodology to monitor the movement of LBM through the supply chain, ensuring compliance with ISCC-EU certification standards, the Renewable Energy Directive II, and FuelEU Maritime regulations. It also aligns with frameworks under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, supporting the development of consistent international accounting methodologies.
This test allows CMA CGM to verify the recognition of mass-balanced LBM within the EU Emissions Trading System. A similar pilot, ensuring full sustainability certification, is planned for the Port of Singapore, further expanding the initiative’s reach.
