Saft delivers innovative LTO traction batteries to power Siemens Mobility’s hydrogen trains
Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, is supplying its cutting-edge lithium titanate oxide traction batteries to Siemens Mobility for seven next-generation Mireo Plus H hydrogen trains in Germany. These lithium-ion batteries form part of a hybrid power system with fuel cells, providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional diesel multiple units. This innovative combination allows the Mireo Plus H trains to operate emission-free over long distances without the need for overhead power lines.
This marks a significant milestone for Saft, as it is the first time their LTO batteries are being used in a major commercial rail project.
Cedric Duclos, CEO of Saft, commented on the project:
“The contract is the successful culmination of a long-term development project with Siemens Mobility. Adopting this innovative technology for traction applications offers significant advantages, including improved safety, reliability, lower CO2 emissions, longer lifespan, and enhanced power.”
Albrecht Neumann, CEO of Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, added:
“Siemens Mobility is committed to reducing emissions in mobility, and the Mireo Plus H trains are a crucial step in the decarbonisation of rail transport. The collaboration with Saft has led to the development of an LTO technology adapted for hydrogen trains, where the traction batteries play a critical role.”
The Mireo Plus H trains use hydrogen as the primary power source, with the LTO batteries providing additional power during acceleration, braking, and load leveling for maximum fuel cell efficiency. Each trainset is equipped with two LTO batteries to ensure optimal performance.
Saft’s LTO batteries, developed at their Bordeaux research center and assembled in Nersac, France, offer 10 times the cycle life of other technologies and superior charge and discharge capabilities, essential for traction applications. Deliveries to Siemens Mobility began in summer 2024. This collaboration demonstrates Saft’s ability to tailor advanced battery solutions to meet specific customer needs and advances their portfolio of Li-ion chemistries for sustainable transport solutions.
