Stolt Tank Containers and Chemical Company innovate to solve Winter TDI transport challenge
For over 12 years, STC has been a trusted logistics partner for a major customer, managing the transportation of essential chemicals such as TDI, a compound critical to the production of coatings, sealants, and adhesives. This longstanding partnership, rooted in mutual trust and a deep understanding of operational requirements, extends across various regions of China. However, a new challenge arose when the customer encountered a significant issue at their plant in northern China.
During the winter months, plummeting temperatures caused TDI to solidify, creating substantial difficulties in unloading the material efficiently. This solidification not only slowed down operations but also posed a risk to the integrity of the product. The customer urgently needed a solution to maintain smooth operations during the colder months.
Shirley Zhang, sales manager at STC North China, spearheaded the effort to resolve the issue. With her extensive knowledge of both the logistics and chemical industries, Zhang collaborated closely with the customer to devise a customised solution. Rather than relying on conventional approaches, her focus was on developing an innovative and practical fix that would preserve the product’s quality and enhance operational efficiency.
After thorough analysis and testing, Zhang and her team proposed the installation of a specialised steam heating device on the bottom valve of the tanks used to transport TDI. This modification prevented the chemical from solidifying during transit, allowing for quicker, more efficient unloading—reducing the process time by one to two hours per shipment. The solution not only resolved the issue but also significantly improved overall efficiency.
The customer was highly impressed with this innovative approach, and Zhang’s swift and effective leadership was recognised when STC received the prestigious Outstanding Service Award at the customer’s awards ceremony.
This success story underscores the value of innovation and proactive problem-solving in bulk liquid logistics. Shirley Zhang’s leadership and STC’s commitment to providing tailored solutions not only helped their customer overcome a critical challenge but also highlighted the importance of collaboration in driving sustainable success. The partnership remains strong, with this case serving as a testament to how innovative strategies can lead to operational excellence.
