The Port of Barcelona awards the contract for construction of the embankment of the new Catalunya wharf enclosures for €72.3 million

The Port of Barcelona’s management board has awarded the contract for the construction of the embankment of the new Catalunya Wharf to a joint venture between Sacyr Construcción, SA and José Antonio Romero Polo, SAU. The contract, valued at €72,359,045.87 (excluding VAT), will be completed within 27 months.

Project Scope and Circular Economy Approach
The project involves constructing a sea embankment that will form the first enclosure for depositing materials from dredging activities across the port, including the port docks, navigation channel, Adossat Wharf, and new mooring points at the Energy Wharf. The embankment will cover an area of 44.7 hectares between the South and Prat Wharves, reaching depths of up to 16 metres. It will have the capacity to hold nearly 6.3 million m³ of materials, enabling the development of terraces for the future Catalunya Wharf.

As part of a circular economy initiative, the project includes a dedicated storage and material management terrace, promoting material recycling and reducing unnecessary transport to external locations.

Strategic Importance for Port Reorganisation
The embankment construction represents the first step in a broader reorganisation of port activity in the southern area. The objective is to centralise container movement in this zone, enhancing efficiency while supporting the Port of Barcelona’s decarbonisation strategy and meeting evolving maritime and port sector requirements.

Project Timeline and Environmental Approval
The tender was launched one year ago, following the favourable Environmental Impact Statement issued by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge in January 2024. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2025.
