Ulusoy Sealines joins Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool as offtaker
Turkish shipping company Ulusoy Sealines has joined Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool as an offtaker of the pool’s regulation compliance service. The company, which operates a fleet of ro-ro vessels and cargo ships, runs a regular route transporting passengers and freight between the Turkish port of Cesme and the Italian port of Trieste.
When calling at European ports, Ulusoy Sealines’ vessels are subject to the European Union’s FuelEU Maritime regulation. By participating in Gasum’s pool, the company can purchase compliance as a service, allowing one vessel using biofuel to generate compliance on behalf of others.
According to Mesut Cesur, general manager of Ulusoy Sealines, Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool stands out as the most reliable, cost-effective, and straightforward option. He emphasised that Gasum’s control over the entire process—from data gathering to biofuel bunkering—ensures trust and efficiency in meeting regulatory requirements.
Jacob Granqvist, vice president, Maritime at Gasum, expressed enthusiasm about Ulusoy Sealines joining the pool, highlighting the growing recognition of the service’s reliability across the maritime industry. He noted that this partnership expands Gasum’s reach beyond Northwest Europe and underscores the importance of early decision-making in response to regulatory requirements.
FuelEU Maritime and Gasum’s Verified Pool
FuelEU Maritime is a European Union regulation designed to increase the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels in the shipping industry. The regulation applies to all vessels exceeding 5,000 gross tonnage calling at EU ports. From 2025, shipowners will be required to reduce the carbon intensity of their fuel by two percent, with the reduction target increasing progressively to 80 percent by 2050. To facilitate compliance, FuelEU Maritime allows for the voluntary pooling of emission reductions between vessels.
Gasum supports compliance by supplying the necessary amount of liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) to the pool’s compliance-generating vessels. The company utilises DNV’s technology to collect and validate fuel consumption and emissions data, with DNV verifying the pool’s balance for EU reporting at the end of each year.
Bio-LNG, derived from waste, is a fully renewable and environmentally friendly fuel that reduces life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 90 percent compared to fossil fuels. Gasum’s strategic objective is to provide customers with 7 TWh of renewable gas, including biomethane and e-methane, annually by 2027.
