Vale and Wabtec finalise locomotive purchase agreement
Vale has announced an agreement with Wabtec Corporation to acquire 50 new Evolution Series locomotives for its Vitória a Minas Railroad and Carajás Railroad. This investment marks a significant step in Vale’s fleet modernisation and decarbonisation programme, aimed at improving efficiency and reducing emissions in its rail operations. Wabtec will manufacture the locomotives at its facility in Contagem, Brazil, with deliveries set to begin in 2026.
Commitment to Sustainability and Efficiency
Carlos Medeiros, vice president of operations at Vale, highlighted the company’s focus on sustainability and operational excellence, stating:“Vale has chosen locomotives that have a proven track record in the market and align with our commitment to sustainability, efficiency, and safety. The renewal and modernisation plan for the EFVM and EFC fleets is designed to contribute to the future of decarbonisation in the rail sector.”
As part of Vale’s fleet renewal plan, the company will integrate 36 Wabtec EVOBBW locomotives for EFVM and 14 Wabtec ES58ACi locomotives for EFC. These locomotives are among the most advanced models available and are designed to operate with higher blends of biodiesel, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Vale and Wabtec also plan to conduct further testing to explore the potential for increasing the biodiesel percentage in future operations.
Danilo Miyasato, president and regional leader of Wabtec LATAM, emphasised Wabtec’s commitment to sustainable rail transport:
“We are proud to support Vale and our customers with advanced technologies that reduce CO₂ emissions and enhance operational efficiency. Wabtec remains at the forefront of innovation, investing in sustainable solutions and alternative fuel technologies for a future of zero-emission rail transport.”
Enhanced Operational Efficiency and Lower Emissions
The Evolution Series locomotives feature advanced diesel engine technology, delivering significant gains in fuel efficiency, extended maintenance intervals, and lower operating costs. The AC traction motors enhance hauling capacity by more than 50 percent, improving overall performance. Already in operation on the Carajás Railroad, this model will now be introduced to the Vitória a Minas Railroad fleet.
In addition to fuel savings, the Evolution Series locomotives contribute to Vale’s decarbonisation efforts by reducing CO₂ emissions compared to older FDL engine models. These locomotives also support a transition towards alternative fuels, reinforcing Vale’s long-term commitment to sustainability.
Designed with wider cabs, the locomotives prioritise ergonomics and operator comfort, while an optimised onboard system layout ensures easier maintenance and increased efficiency.
Advancing Rail Transport Sustainability
With this latest acquisition, Vale continues to drive forward its rail sector sustainability initiatives, modernising its fleet while reducing environmental impact. The collaboration with Wabtec aligns with Vale’s broader strategy to decarbonise its operations and transition towards low-carbon energy solutions, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable rail transport.
