Wärtsilä and Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions partner to provide customers with optimal service support

Technology group Wärtsilä and Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 30 September 2024, marking a significant step in formalising their collaboration. The MoU ensures that vessels calling at Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions for repairs, maintenance, or retrofit projects, particularly those involving 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines and propulsion equipment, will receive enhanced service support.

At the signing ceremony, Jos J.A.A. Goris, chief executive officer of Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions, emphasised the importance of the agreement, stating, “This agreement with Wärtsilä enhances our technical capabilities, enabling our shipyard to offer specialised engine and propulsion solutions and services to both local and international clients with greater safety, speed, and efficiency.”

The MoU covers a wide range of services, including maintenance, engine upgrades, eco-friendly reconditioning technologies, decarbonisation projects, and retrofit solutions such as 2-stroke radical de-rating services and dual-fuel conversions. The partnership also extends to engineering support and training, utilising Wärtsilä’s Land and Sea Academy facilities.

Furthermore, the two companies will collaborate on providing shipowners and operators with expert advice on decarbonisation options, including feasibility studies for sustainable fuel retrofits, conversion projects, and hybrid propulsion solutions.

The agreement also enables Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions to expand its services to modern LNGC carriers equipped with advanced dual-fuel 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines. Wärtsilä’s expertise in marine maintenance will support these vessels, reinforcing the shipyard’s capabilities in delivering high-quality services.

Stefan Wiik, vice president of Parts and Field Service at Wärtsilä Marine, highlighted the importance of collaboration in the maritime industry’s transition to more efficient and sustainable operations. “This agreement with Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions is a crucial step in ensuring the premium quality of services delivered to shipowners and operators,” Wiik said.

This long-standing partnership between Wärtsilä and Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions continues to provide clients with access to proven products, systems, and world-class services at the Erhama Bin Jaber Al Jalahma shipyard complex.
