Women in Logistics a new industry-wide consortium to close the gender gap in chemical logistics Europe
Logistics has historically been a male-dominated industry, and although the gender gap is gradually narrowing, it remains significant. For example, women represent only 6 percent or less of the truck driver population in Europe. Addressing this imbalance could not only alleviate the driver shortage but also enhance gender diversity among drivers.
The industry also encounters gender disparities in operational roles and leadership positions, influenced by longstanding perceptions and current job requirements. Achieving a better male-female balance could make jobs more appealing to potential employees and enhance organisational culture and performance.
Research indicates that diverse teams are more robust and successful, with inclusive companies often enjoying superior business outcomes. Nevertheless, leadership positions in logistics continue to be predominantly occupied by men.
The economic benefits of achieving improved gender balance are substantial. The International Labor Organisation examined diversity management in 13,000 companies across 70 countries, concluding that more diverse companies excel in talent recruitment and retention, creativity, innovation, and turnover. Similarly, BlackRock’s analysis of 1,500 MSCI companies over the past decade revealed that companies with the most diverse workforces outperformed their less diverse counterparts in return on assets (RoA) by 29 percent annually from 2013 to 2022.
However, the World Economic Forum estimates that achieving global gender balance in business will take 131 years, a projection likely even more dire for the male-dominated logistics sector, underscoring the need for urgent action.
Collaboration for Change
Women in Logistics (WIL) is an industry-wide initiative founded by Dow and H.Essers, along with sector associations ECTA and Cefic. This initiative was sparked by Dow’s Supplier Diversity Strategy and H.Essers’ commitment to diversity as a certified female-owned company. The two companies reached out across the industry to promote collaboration in bridging the gender gap and fostering an inclusive environment. They received immediate support from ECTA, the EU association of chemical logistics providers, and Cefic, the EU association of the chemical industry. Six companies—Den Hartogh, Bertschi, Suttons Tankers, LyondellBasell, Eastman, and Covestro—have pledged their involvement and joined the WIL board. Together, these ten organisations aim to champion diversity in the industry and accelerate the closure of the gender gap in European chemical logistics.
WIL seeks to create a more attractive, equitable, and innovative logistics sector.
Bridging the Gender Gap
The consortium’s focus is on achieving a better male-female balance in European logistics, starting with the chemical sector. Their approach begins with small steps to ensure gradual progress and sustainable change. Based on data-driven top-down awareness, WIL aims to be an inspiring platform for company action plans. The consortium is dedicated to fostering conditions that promote diversity while building an inclusive and thriving logistics ecosystem.
Closing the gender gap in the European logistics sector is crucial, but achieving a healthy balance is more important than adhering to strict ratios. Research shows that even a 30/70 female-to-male ratio can positively impact outcomes. By blending skills within teams, the best results can be obtained, which indirectly necessitates a good mix of genders. This balanced approach not only enhances team performance but also nurtures innovation, sustainability, compliance, and resilience within the logistics industry.
The commitment to diversity and inclusion is aimed at fostering a work environment where all employees feel valued and can thrive. By prioritising these principles, the belief is that a diverse logistics sector will excel in numerous ways, simultaneously attracting a broader talent pool. This synergy will ultimately drive success and growth.
Embark on This Journey
As the journey unfolds, industry stakeholders are invited to join these efforts. By focusing on leadership, drivers, and operators, the initiative strives to engender meaningful change and cultivate a more diverse and inclusive industry landscape. Through collaborative efforts and ongoing engagement, Women in Logistics is dedicated to advancing gender equity and empowering women at all levels of the logistics sector.
