50 new JNA-X box wagons increase UK’s rail freight capacity

In a significant development for the rail freight sector, Porterbrook and GB Railfreight have sealed an agreement with Greenbrier for the production and procurement of 50 new box wagons.

This deal represents a continued investment in rail freight infrastructure, supplementing the 100 intermodal twin wagons and 50 box wagons already integrated into the UK rail network since 2022.

Scheduled to arrive in the UK by Q3 2024, these new wagons will not only replace aging assets but also contribute to expanding the nation’s rail freight capacity.

GB Railfreight will deploy these wagons to facilitate the transportation of bulk construction materials such as ballast and stone, aligning with the anticipated growth in freight demand for the construction sector.

Liam Day, commercial director of GB Railfreight, expressed optimism about the partnership with Porterbrook, emphasizing the modernization of their fleet through the acquisition of 50 state-of-the-art box wagons. He highlighted the pivotal role these wagons will play in driving business growth and facilitating the efficient delivery of materials to key construction projects nationwide.

Mark Wyborn, head of freight and route services at Porterbrook, underscored the company’s commitment to long-term investment in rail freight. He emphasized their dedication to providing cost-effective, innovative, and environmentally sustainable freight rolling stock to the UK railway network.

John Brown, sales director at Greenbrier, hailed the new order for JNA box wagons as a testament to their clients’ confidence in their industry-leading solutions. He affirmed Greenbrier’s commitment to the UK rail industry, pledging to deliver reliable and efficient rolling stock to meet the evolving needs of their customers.

Data from The Office of Road and Rail indicates a significant uptick in freight volumes within the construction sector, reaching record levels. This, coupled with the Government’s ambitious target to boost rail freight by 75 percent by 2050, sets a promising growth trajectory for the industry.
