INEOS Olefins & Polymers Europe launches new advanced recycled plastic production at its Lavera site in Southern France

INEOS Olefins & Polymers in Lavera, Southern France, has received its first deliveries of pyrolysis oil, an innovative feedstock produced from recycled plastic waste. The facility will use this material to manufacture recycled polymers that help customers meet EU requirements mandating a minimum 10 percent recycled content in food contact, medical, and sensitive plastic packaging by 2030.

The pyrolysis oil is produced in Europe from post-consumer plastic packaging waste unsuitable for mechanical recycling through a process called advanced recycling. Part of the Lavera cracker was adapted to process this renewable feedstock alongside traditional materials, enabling production of recycled ethylene and propylene for conversion into virgin-quality recycled polyethylene and polypropylene across INEOS facilities in Lavera, Sarralbe, and Rosignano.

The renewable products are certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification scheme (ISCC PLUS), which validates feedstock tracking and recycled content claims through mass balance principles. This technology supports EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation targets while ensuring plastic waste avoids landfill or incineration.

Rob Ingram, CEO of INEOS Olefins & Polymers Europe, emphasised that delivering a circular economy requires both ambition and action. He noted that while mechanical recycling remains essential, advanced recycling expands plastics recycling potential, particularly for high-performance applications. Ingram highlighted the company’s commitment to accelerating circularity through partnerships and its portfolio of circular solutions, describing the initiative as “INEOS driving innovation with purpose.”
