Norfolk Southern trains over 5,400 first responders in 2023
In 2023, Norfolk Southern achieved a significant milestone by training 5,413 first responders through its Operation Awareness & Response program. This comprehensive initiative included hands-on events conducted across 15 cities, featuring the company’s renowned Safety Train.
As an integral component of Norfolk Southern’s commitment to safety, the OAR program establishes crucial partnerships with first responders across its expansive 22-state network. The program facilitates the dissemination of essential information and provides comprehensive training to empower first responders in preparing for potential rail incidents.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp underscored the importance of public safety training during a Safety Train event in Atlanta, where he joined metro-Atlanta first responders to kick off National Safety Month in June. Governor Kemp expressed gratitude for Norfolk Southern’s impactful efforts, emphasizing the significance of training 5,000 first responders annually.
Since its inception in 2015, Norfolk Southern’s OAR program has successfully trained a cumulative total of 45,454 first responders. The program not only imparts hands-on experience but also equips participants with the knowledge necessary to ensure safety during emergency responses.
Robert Wood, Director of Hazardous Materials at Norfolk Southern, highlighted the program’s value in fostering connections with local first responders. He emphasized that Norfolk Southern’s own professionals serve as instructors, providing a unique opportunity to build relationships with the local heroes dedicated to ensuring community safety.
Norfolk Southern’s commitment to safety extends beyond traditional training methods. The OAR program features specially equipped tank and flat cars, allowing first responders to train on realistic scenarios with valves and fittings mirroring those encountered in actual emergencies. The training encompasses a range of topics in a traveling classroom, emphasizing safety around the railroad, tank car identification, locomotive emergencies, and effective response strategies.
Several safety training events also incorporated full-scale drills, simulating real emergency scenarios and involving equipment and gear used in actual emergencies. These drills provided first responders with practical experience and enhanced their preparedness for real-world incidents.
In September 2023, Norfolk Southern took a significant step by breaking ground on a new First Responder Training Center in East Palestine, Ohio. This center, slated to serve Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and the broader region, will expand upon the OAR program, offering ongoing, free training for first responders. The center aims to strengthen coordination between railroads and first responders, attracting participants from the region and further contributing to community safety.
Looking ahead to 2024, Norfolk Southern remains steadfast in its commitment to safety and plans to train over 5,000 additional first responders. As a company dedicated to fostering stronger relationships with first responders, Norfolk Southern recognizes the heroic efforts of these individuals and is honored to collaborate with them in making communities even safer.
