VARO and Orim Energy to scale-up sustainable shipping fuel capabilities

VARO Energy and Orim Energy have formed a strategic alliance to provide biofuels to shipping customers in the Port of Rotterdam and the wider Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp region. This partnership aims to support the decarbonisation of maritime transportation and inland shipping in Northern Europe, aligning with the International Maritime Organisation’s targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by at least 20 percent by 2030 and at least 70 percent by 2050, compared with 2008 levels.

The demand for biofuels is expected to grow rapidly, driven by new EU regulations and the market’s shift towards sustainable alternatives. VARO’s expertise in biofuel trading and manufacturing, combined with Orim’s extensive distribution, storage, and bunkering capabilities in ARA, positions the alliance to meet this increased demand effectively. Under the agreement, VARO will handle the sourcing, production, and blending of various waste and advanced biofeedstocks, while Orim will manage the distribution and delivery of the final biofuel blends to customers’ vessels.

VARO has a proven track record of supplying biofuels for maritime logistics, including agreements with the Port of Rotterdam and shipping companies like Höegh Autoliners. This partnership underscores VARO’s commitment to becoming the partner of choice for customers in the energy transition by offering low-carbon energy solutions to support decarbonisation efforts.

Dev Sanyal, CEO of VARO, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting its importance in meeting rising demand for blended biofuels and contributing to the decarbonisation targets of the EU and IMO. Edwin Coppens, Managing Director of Orim, emphasised the benefits of the collaboration, stating that it allows both companies to leverage their strengths and scale up biofuel operations while ensuring quality assurance and optimising blending expertise.

Biofuels offer significant environmental benefits, including reduced CO2 and other emissions, efficient resource utilisation, and improved air quality. With lower carbon intensity compared to conventional fossil fuels, biofuels provide a cleaner and greener fuel option for the maritime industry while remaining compatible with existing ship engines and infrastructure, facilitating a smooth transition towards sustainability without costly modifications.
