The iconic Big Boy locomotive has recently been upgraded with a state-of-the-art Positive Train Control system, an advanced safety measure mandated by federal regulations to prevent certain rail incidents. The new system’s components, including a computer, GPS satellite, and radio antennas, are now fully integrated within Big Boy and its tender, eliminating the need for hard-wired connections to an accompanying diesel locomotive.
The PTC system has been rigorously tested and is now ready for deployment during Big Boy’s upcoming 2024 Westward Bound Tour, which will travel from Wyoming to California.

“We are still going to travel with a diesel locomotive most of the time – saving wear and tear on Big Boy’s brakes and extending fuel and water, when needed – but this is going to give our Steam team greater flexibility to park the locomotive, switch the train or operate Big Boy solely as needed,” said Ed Dickens, manager-Heritage Operations and Big Boy locomotive engineer.
Big Boy’s four-week tour will commence on June 30, covering five western U.S. states: Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, California, and a brief segment in southeast Idaho.
The initial PTC unit, installed in 2021, featured a Cab Display Unit mounted in the cab. This interactive screen is essential for Big Boy’s locomotive engineer and conductor, allowing them to monitor speed, confirm track authority, and display route grade profiles, among other critical functions.
While the CDU remains in its original position, the new system’s computer and other key components are now housed in the tender. This tender, which trails behind Big Boy, carries the fuel and water necessary to power the steam engine. The locomotive operates by burning oil in Big Boy’s firebox, heating water to produce the steam that drives the engine.
“This new system has already made my life and the Steam team’s lives simpler, making it easier to plan and execute trips,” said Dickens. “We can now easily uncouple Big Boy from the diesel engine without worrying about moving hard wires.”
The enhancement of Big Boy with modern technology not only boosts operational efficiency but also ensures greater safety and flexibility for future tours. This legendary locomotive continues to captivate and inspire, seamlessly blending historical charm with contemporary advancements.
