ABP unveils ambitious masterplan for decarbonised growth at the Port of Newport.

Associated British Ports, the UK’s leading port operator, has unveiled ambitious plans for the Port of Newport, signaling a new era of green growth for both the port and the city.

At the heart of ABP’s business lies a commitment to sustainability, and with this latest initiative, the company aims to pave the way for Newport to become a hub of clean manufacturing and logistics, positioning it for success in the next industrial age.

ABP’s visionary strategy revolves around energy, with a focus on harnessing wind and solar sources. These renewable energy sources will be integrated with hydrogen electrolysis and e-fuels manufacturing plants, as well as carbon capture and heat networks. These facilities will support next-generation manufacturing and logistics, attracting businesses seeking to future-proof their operations. The resulting Newport clean growth hub is expected to generate hundreds of highly productive jobs, benefiting the city and beyond.

While the plan includes innovations aimed at supporting businesses in meeting net-zero targets, ABP remains committed to its classic port role. This entails investments in reconfigured access, new cargo-handling equipment, high-efficiency warehousing, and ready-to-go development sites, all supported by cutting-edge IT infrastructure.

Ashley Curnow, Divisional Port Manager at ABP, expressed optimism about the Masterplan, stating: “This is a bold step towards a sustainable future. Newport has a history of reinvention, and we are now embarking on a journey that will position both the port and the city as key players in the transition towards a decarbonised economy.”

The Masterplan outlines three main objectives: to create a thriving, decarbonised industrial logistics port; establish a clean growth hub; and promote well-being for current and future generations.

Jane Mudd MP applauded ABP’s commitment to sustainability and collaboration, expressing excitement about the potential for Newport’s future. “We look forward to working with ABP to implement the aspirations of the Masterplan,” she said.

Newport is the latest of ABP’s five ports in South Wales to undergo extensive master planning, following Barry and Port Talbot, as part of ABP’s wider Wales Vision.

Ashley Curnow emphasised ABP’s optimism about Newport’s potential for innovative and productive growth, inviting stakeholders, customers, and the broader community to join ABP on the journey towards a more sustainable and prosperous future for Newport.
