ABP unveils ambitious masterplan for Port of Barrow
Associated British Ports, the UK’s leading port operator, has unveiled an ambitious masterplan for the Port of Barrow aimed at fostering local economic growth and adapting to significant investments expected in the region by 2040 and beyond. The plan, crafted by ABP’s award-winning internal team, focuses on expanding Barrow’s capacity and capabilities to support the UK’s role in the AUKUS partnership and the country’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Bryan Davies, ABP’s Divisional port manager for the Northwest and Scotland, emphasised the importance of the port’s development for Barrow’s advanced engineering cluster and the local community. MP Michelle Scrogham also praised the plan’s focus on sustainable growth and renewable energy, highlighting its potential long-term benefits for the region.
The masterplan outlines three core objectives: enhancing Barrow’s advanced engineering capabilities, boosting the port’s role in renewable energy and net-zero efforts, and reinforcing the local economy through sustainable practices. A key component is the development of the Barrow EnergyDock, which will generate up to 32 MWp of green electricity from a floating solar array in Cavendish Dock.
ABP also plans to expand offshore wind operations & maintenance bases, develop new maritime connections for hydrogen import and carbon storage, and support community projects like the Barrow Marina Village. Cllr Jonathan Brook, Leader of Westmorland and Furness Council, called for collaboration to bring the masterplan to life, ensuring Barrow thrives as a vital hub for engineering and renewable energy.
