Alstom signs a €430 million contract for 10 Aventra trains with associated maintenance for the Elizabeth line in London

Alstom, a leading global provider of smart and sustainable mobility solutions, has secured a contract worth approximately €430 million for the delivery of 10 new nine-car Aventra trains for London’s Elizabeth line. The contract also includes associated maintenance services until 2046.

The Elizabeth line, which commenced operations in 2022, has been witnessing higher passenger demand than initially projected. The existing fleet of 70 Aventra Class 345 trains, manufactured by Alstom, is expected to fall short in meeting the growing demand in the coming years and into the 2030s.

To address this, Alstom will manufacture additional Aventra electric multiple unit (EMU) passenger trains at its Derby Litchurch Lane Works, the sole UK facility responsible for the design, engineering, construction, and testing of trains for both domestic and international markets.

Nick Crossfield, Managing Director UK and Ireland at Alstom, expressed his satisfaction with the contract, stating, “We are delighted to now have a confirmed workload for Derby Litchurch Lane and our supply chain across the UK.” Crossfield also emphasized the importance of the UK market for Alstom, considering it as one of their key global markets.

Under the contract, the new trains will be funded with £220.5 million from the Department for Transport, while Transport for London will be responsible for the train maintenance services until 2046. This collaboration ensures the efficient operation and maintenance of the trains on the Elizabeth line, benefiting passengers and supporting the long-term sustainability of London’s transport network.
