Argent Energy among first to use Port of Amsterdam transition fund to cut 10% of emissions
The company expects the initiative to reduce CO₂ emissions at its site by more than 2,600 tonnes annually, representing approximately 10 percent of total emissions from the facility. The total investment in the project is estimated at around €1.9 million, with €300,000 financed through the Transition Fund.
Argent Energy produces biodiesel from waste streams including animal fats, food waste residues and other recovered materials. The resulting fuel serves as an alternative to conventional fossil diesel and is estimated to reduce lifecycle CO₂ emissions by approximately 85 to 90 percent.
As part of the latest sustainability project, Argent Energy will invest in a new hot water circulation system designed to recover and reuse heat generated during biodiesel production. The recovered heat will be used to warm storage tanks at the facility, replacing an existing natural gas-based heating system.
The technology being implemented is already proven and commercially available, with the next phase focused on finalising the technical design. Construction of the new system is expected to begin during 2027.
Louise Calviou, CEO of Argent Energy, said the company was already producing sustainable fuels from waste streams and that the latest investment would further improve the efficiency and sustainability of its operations. She noted that support from the Transition Fund had enabled the company to accelerate the project and reduce dependence on natural gas.
The Port of Amsterdam established the Transition Fund to help companies operating in the port address significant sustainability challenges and accelerate progress toward climate neutrality by 2050. The fund specifically supports businesses seeking to reduce CO₂ emissions and transition away from fossil fuel-related activities.
Hannah de Valk, programme manager CO₂ Reduction at the Port of Amsterdam, said the fund was designed to support companies facing major sustainability pressures, including high-emission industries and terminals handling fossil fuel cargoes. She added that projects such as Argent Energy’s demonstrate how existing industrial operations can become more sustainable through practical and immediately deployable solutions while reducing reliance on fossil energy sources.
