Bertschi launches new Antwerp Zomerweg dangerous goods storage and Trimodal terminal in Europe’s largest chemical hub

Bertschi Group, a global leader in intermodal chemical logistics, has officially commenced operations at the newly constructed Antwerp Zomerweg Terminal. Strategically positioned within Europe’s largest integrated chemical cluster, the terminal is set to enhance the Group’s capabilities in the storage and distribution of Dangerous Goods and non-DG products via trimodal services—rail, barge, and truck. Located adjacent to Bertschi’s Antwerp subsidiary and its established Plastics Hub, AZT strengthens the company’s presence in one of the world’s most critical logistics hubs.

The terminal spans 60,000m² and is purpose-built for high-capacity chemical logistics. It features storage for over 2,500 TEUs, with 1,290 TEUs specifically designated for DG products in tank containers. Advanced safety measures, including fire-resistant zones, redundant fire pumps, and a remotely operated gantry crane, ensure secure and efficient operations. AZT joins Bertschi’s global network of facilities, including its hubs in Rotterdam, Jurong Island (Singapore), and Zhangjiagang (China), enabling the Group to manage the growing international trade of chemical products seamlessly.

The Antwerp Zomerweg Terminal represents a key milestone in Bertschi’s strategy to support secure and sustainable global chemical supply chains. Equipped with four 650-metre rail sidings capable of handling full trains, the terminal enhances intermodal options for customers, ensuring smooth transitions between storage, barge, rail, and truck.

This comprehensive design makes AZT an ideal hub for managing imports and exports. Goods arriving at the deep-sea port can be transported by barge, stored securely in tank containers at the terminal, and then distributed intermodally across Europe.

The terminal is equipped with permits for storing DG products of ADR classes 3, 4.1, 5.1, 5.2, 6.1, 8, and 9. It also offers bonded storage services, along with 60 heating slots for product warming, supported by a high level of process automation.

Bertschi CEO Jan Arnet highlighted the importance of the new terminal, stating:
“We’re thrilled to expand our logistics capabilities here in Antwerp. This terminal brings us closer to our customers, with specialised solutions for storage, import, export, and intermodal distribution of liquid DG chemicals backed by cutting-edge safety and technology. We look forward to further growth at AZT and continuing our commitment to innovation in the industry.”

With its state-of-the-art features, the Antwerp Zomerweg Terminal cements Bertschi’s position as a leading player in chemical logistics, supporting the industry’s evolving demands with a focus on safety, sustainability, and innovation.
