Boskalis invests in 24,000 tonne high-end Cable Lay Vessel to support the energy transition

Royal Boskalis B.V. (Boskalis) has announced plans to invest in a new high-capacity Cable Lay Vessel (CLV), reinforcing its position in the offshore energy sector and supporting the global shift toward renewable energy. The vessel is being developed to address the increasing demand for long-distance cable installation in the interconnector and offshore wind sectors, particularly for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables.

The growing electrification of energy systems, driven by decarbonisation goals and energy security initiatives, is accelerating the need for stronger grid infrastructure worldwide. Cross-border interconnectors and offshore wind transmission networks are increasingly dependent on long-distance cable solutions, a demand the new vessel is designed to meet. The CLV is scheduled to enter service in 2029.

The vessel will be equipped with two 12,000-ton cable carousels, including a concentric carousel. Its advanced design will allow for the installation of longer continuous cable sections, reducing the need for costly offshore joints and improving long-term cable reliability.

Boskalis brings more than 15 years of subsea cable installation experience to the project, having participated in over 140 cable-related offshore projects. The company currently operates three cable lay vessels, a trenching support vessel, and a specialised fleet of trenching equipment.

Through its integrated capabilities in survey, dredging, seabed preparation, cable laying, and rock installation, Boskalis is able to provide end-to-end offshore infrastructure solutions. The addition of the new CLV is expected to further strengthen the company’s role in advancing the global energy transition and supporting sustainable infrastructure development.
