CPKC investing US$800 million in American manufacturing with Tier 4 locomotives

Canadian Pacific Kansas City is continuing the renewal of its locomotive fleet as part of a multi-year investment programme valued at more than US$800 million, supporting American manufacturing and advancing the company’s long-term growth strategy.

In 2025, CPKC completed the purchase of 100 Tier 4 locomotives from Wabtec, manufactured in Texas. Building on this investment, the company has announced plans to acquire an additional 30 Tier 4 locomotives from Progress Rail in 2026, which will be built in Indiana. CPKC also expects delivery of a further 70 Texas-built Tier 4 locomotives from Wabtec during the current year.

The investment programme is aimed at renewing CPKC’s road locomotive fleet to support growth, enhance service reliability and improve fuel efficiency across its North American operations. The new locomotives are expected to strengthen the company’s ability to deliver industry-leading service to customers while contributing to the broader North American economy.

CPKC is scheduled to receive the first two of 70 Wabtec Evolution Series ET44AC Tier 4 locomotives in January, with the units being manufactured at Wabtec’s facility in Dallas, Texas. In the second half of 2026, the company expects to take delivery of 30 EMD SD70ACe-T4 Tier 4 freight locomotives from Progress Rail’s manufacturing facility in Muncie, Indiana. These units form part of a broader order for 65 new Tier 4 locomotives from Progress Rail.

The latest purchases form part of CPKC’s ongoing locomotive renewal programme and align with the company’s previously announced multi-year capital plan, reinforcing its commitment to modern, efficient and reliable rail operations.
