Electrochaea and Erik Thun AB enter negotiations on off-take of e-methane for green maritime fuel

Electrochaea and Erik Thun AB have initiated discussions by signing a Letter of Intent to explore the off-take of e-methane produced by Electrochaea’s subsidiary, BioCAT Roslev Aps in Denmark, for maritime fuel applications in vessels operated by Erik Thun AB. Presently, Electrochaea is in the process of establishing a power-to-gas production facility in Skive, Denmark. This initiative will utilise renewable power sourced from wind energy to generate green hydrogen, which, in combination with CO2 from biogas production at Rybjerg Biogas, will undergo bio-methanation using Electrochaea’s patented technology to produce e-methane. The resulting e-methane will be integrated into the Danish gas grid, contributing to the decarbonisation efforts of gas consumers across Europe while also meeting EU requirements for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin.

Erik Thun AB intends to replace fossil-based LNG fuel with e-methane for its vessels, enabling the company to maintain its existing LNG fleet without necessitating modifications to accommodate other renewable fuels. Johan Källsson, managing director of Erik Thun AB, underscores the maritime industry’s imperative to embrace sustainability, stating, “At Erik Thun AB, we are resolute in our commitment to lead the transition towards carbon neutrality by incorporating renewable fuels into our operations.” Källsson highlights e-methane as a promising cleaner alternative for vessels currently powered by LNG, expressing pride in the collaboration and the company’s pioneering efforts in substituting fossil fuels with renewable e-methane.

Doris Hafenbradl, Electrochaea’s CTO and managing director, highlights the significance of Electrochaea’s bio-methanation technology in providing low-carbon fuel for the maritime sector. Hafenbradl underscores the potential of e-methane in decarbonising maritime operations, expressing satisfaction in negotiating the off-take of e-methane with Erik Thun AB, a forward-thinking and environmentally conscious shipping company. Hafenbradl emphasises the importance of the maritime industry as a key market for e-methane produced through their technology, citing Erik Thun AB’s interest as further validation of its potential impact.
