First vessel launched in eight-ship chemical tanker newbuild programme

The first vessel in an eight-ship chemical tanker newbuild programme has been launched at Nantong Xiangyu Shipyard in China, marking a significant milestone in a series being developed in partnership with NYK Line.

The vessel was launched on 2nd June and is the first of eight 38,000 dwt stainless steel chemical parcel tankers scheduled for delivery through to 2029. The programme is designed to strengthen fleet capabilities while incorporating technologies aimed at improving operational efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

Based on designs developed by FKAB Marine Design, the new vessel features 30 cargo tank segregations, providing the flexibility required to transport a wide range of chemical products. The design also incorporates several energy-efficiency measures intended to lower fuel consumption and reduce emissions during operation.

In line with current environmental regulations, the tanker meets International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Tier III emissions requirements and is equipped with shore power connectivity, enabling reduced emissions while in port. The vessel has also been designed with future-proofing in mind, including preparations for conversion to methanol fuel and the integration of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) battery system.

The remaining seven vessels in the series are expected to be delivered progressively through 2029, supporting the partners’ long-term fleet renewal and sustainability objectives.

The launch reflects the growing focus within the chemical tanker sector on combining cargo flexibility with improved environmental performance, as shipowners invest in vessels capable of meeting increasingly stringent emissions standards while maintaining operational efficiency.

Once delivered, the newbuild series is expected to enhance transportation capabilities across global chemical trades while positioning the fleet for future advances in alternative fuels and onboard energy technologies.
