Fluxys hydrogen appointed as Hydrogen Network Operator in Belgium

Implementing the Federal Hydrogen Act of 11 July 2023, Federal Energy minister Tinne Van der Straeten has appointed Fluxys hydrogen, a subsidiary of Fluxys Belgium, as the operator for the development and management of a hydrogen transmission grid in Belgium.

The appointment as “HNO” – Hydrogen Network Operator – for Belgium marks a significant advancement in the energy transition. Leveraging Fluxys’ decades of expertise in gas transport, Fluxys hydrogen will develop the necessary infrastructure for transporting hydrogen, a vital component in achieving climate targets.

In line with the federal hydrogen strategy, Fluxys Hydrogen will undertake the development and operation of a hydrogen pipeline network, integrated into the “European Hydrogen Backbone.”. This will facilitate the transportation of essential low-carbon energy for both the Belgian market and neighbouring countries, supporting the decarbonisation of society in a cost-efficient manner while ensuring security of supply.

To expedite the energy transition, Fluxys has actively engaged with the market and initiated preparatory studies. The construction of the hydrogen network will be carried out incrementally, incorporating new-build pipelines and repurposing existing pipelines wherever feasible.

Preparations are underway to lay the initial pipelines in industrial clusters that have demonstrated a clear demand for hydrogen, with support from the Relance and Recovery Funds.

Pascal De Buck, CEO of Fluxys, expressed his delight and pride in Fluxys hydrogen being entrusted with the role of hydrogen network operator for the next two decades. He emphasised Fluxys Hydrogen’s commitment to supporting industry in decarbonisation efforts by delivering low-carbon molecules as part of the “European Hydrogen Backbone.”. In the envisioned energy mix of the future, low-carbon molecules are indispensable for achieving a carbon-neutral future in Belgium and north-western Europe.
