Georgia allots $6M to Brunswick harbor improvements

The Georgia General Assembly has earmarked just over $6 million for special harbour enhancements at the Port of Brunswick as part of the state’s midyear budget adjustment. Governor Brian Kemp officially signed the funding bill into law on February 29.

Governor Kemp expressed pride in signing the FY2024 amended budget, citing its crucial investments in public safety, education, and workforce development. He highlighted the significance of such allocations in advancing Georgia’s position as the premier state for living, working, and raising families. Of particular note was the record funding allocated for infrastructure projects like the Brunswick Harbour, deemed vital to the state’s thriving economy.

The recommended harbour improvement plan by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers encompasses various enhancements, including a bend widener, expansion of the turning basin, and an enlarged meeting area at St. Simons Sound. Kent Fountain, chairman of the Georgia Ports Authority Board, extended gratitude to state lawmakers, members of Congress, and Governor Kemp for their steadfast support of port operations in Brunswick and Savannah. These funds, along with anticipated federal contributions, are expected to bolster GPA’s ability to facilitate efficient global market connections for businesses and job opportunities reliant on Brunswick.

The state’s allocation serves as a pass-through to the Corps of Engineers to cover the non-federal portion of the project costs. With a total project estimate of $17.45 million, the federal share amounts to $11.35 million, representing 65 percent of the total.

GPA president and CEO Griff Lynch emphasised the growing demand witnessed at the Port of Brunswick over the past four years, particularly with the increasing number and size of vessel calls, including expanded car carriers serving Colonel’s Island. Lynch underscored the significance of an improved channel in accommodating this burgeoning business demand, complementing ongoing terminal enhancements in Brunswick.

The next procedural step involves GPA signing a project partnership agreement with the Corps of Engineers, outlining state and federal responsibilities pertinent to the Brunswick Harbour improvements. The project is poised to benefit various vessel types, including auto carriers, bulk, and breakbulk vessels, catering to diverse commodities such as forest products and raw rubber.

The Georgia Ports Authority’s commitment to enhancing Brunswick’s infrastructure is evident through substantial investments exceeding $260 million. Recent and ongoing projects at the Colonel’s Island auto port include expansions in warehousing capacity and roll-on/roll-off cargo storage, further solidifying the terminal’s capability to efficiently handle autos and machinery processing on-site.
