Harald Fotland elected as President of the Norwegian Shipowners’ association

Harald Fotland, CEO of Odfjell, has been elected as president at the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association’s general meeting on March 14, serving for the period 2024–2026.

Fotland, who previously served as the association’s vice president for the past two years, assumes leadership at a pivotal time for the Norwegian shipping industry, which is a cornerstone of the maritime sector, employing nearly 90,000 people along the entire coast and generating values of up to NOK 211 billion.

In his statement following the election, Fotland highlighted the industry’s ambitious climate goals and emphasised the need to develop technology and solutions to achieve these goals. He expressed confidence in the association’s members, who represent one of the world’s most energy-efficient fleets and are poised to lead the way in the green transition.

Against the backdrop of geopolitical challenges, including conflicts in the Middle East and Russia’s war against Ukraine, Fotland underscored the vital role of Norwegian shipping companies in safeguarding Norway’s overall preparedness and infrastructure for security in Norway, Europe, and the West.

With over 90 percent of world trade transported by sea, Fotland stressed the importance of maintaining navigational freedom and advocated for open trade routes and a regulated world order as crucial national security interests for Norway.

Members of the Shipowners’ Association, according to Fotland, are pivotal in driving the transition to a low- and zero-emission society, with the majority committed to investing in climate-neutral solutions and technology that reduces emissions.

Drawing on Norway’s maritime industry’s tradition of innovation, Fotland affirmed its commitment to developing technology and solutions to address global challenges, collaborating closely with the maritime cluster in Norway.

Harald Fotland, born in 1964, brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served as CEO of Odfjell SE since May 2022 and previously holding positions such as chief operating officer  and chief of staff at Odfjell. He has also held various positions in the Navy and currently serves as a board member of the European Community Shipowners’ Association and the Norwegian War Insurance for Ships.
