JERA to implement the world’s first truck-to-ship bunkering of fuel ammonia

JERA Co., Inc. has made the decision to commence truck-to-ship bunkering of fuel ammonia for an ammonia-fueled tugboat owned by NYK Line, starting in late May.

The announcement of this bunkering initiative was made at a ceremony held today at Sea Japan 2024, attended by key stakeholders from JERA, NYK, and Resonac Corporation.

Under a joint study agreement, JERA, NYK, and Resonac have been collaborating to achieve the world’s first bunkering of fuel ammonia to ships. This collaboration has focused on establishing safe handling methods for fuel ammonia and developing systems for its transportation and reception at port areas.

Following progress in the bunkering of fuel ammonia to ships, JERA has decided to supply fuel ammonia to the A-Tug via tanker truck at the port of Yokohama starting in late May 2024. This pioneering initiative will mark the world’s first instance of truck-to-ship bunkering of fuel ammonia.

Scheduled for delivery in June 2024, the A-Tug will benefit from a fuel ammonia bunkering agreement with Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha Corporation, the operator of the A-Tug, ensuring a consistent supply of fuel ammonia.

As part of its commitment to achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050, JERA is actively building hydrogen and ammonia supply chains. The bunkering of fuel ammonia to ships represents a crucial step in this direction, offering a decarbonisation solution beyond the power generation sector and contributing significantly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in maritime transportation.
