MOL takes delivery of LPG-powered newbuilding LPG carrier Energia Grandeur to serve Total

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced the delivery of the newbuilding very large gas carrier (VLGC) Energia Grandeur, ordered by its Singapore-based group company MOL Energia Pte. Ltd. from Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries of South Korea. The handover took place on 29 January off Mokpo Port, South Korea. The vessel will operate under a time charter contract for CSSA Chartering and Shipping Services SA, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies.

The Energia Grandeur is a dual-fuel carrier capable of running on both LPG and conventional heavy oil. When operated on LPG, the vessel achieves a reduction in CO2 emissions of approximately 20 percent and cuts sulphur oxide (SOx), particulate matter (PM) and other pollutants by around 90 percent compared with heavy oil. The vessel is also designed to carry ammonia — a fuel that produces no carbon dioxide during combustion and is widely anticipated to play a significant role as a next-generation clean energy source.

In addition to its dual-fuel capability and ammonia-readiness, the vessel is fitted with a shaft generator system, which allows diesel generators to be shut down while the main engines are running, reducing fuel consumption — and has been financed in part through a transition linked loan, a mechanism that ties loan characteristics such as interest rates to the borrower’s performance against pre-set greenhouse gas reduction targets.

The vessel’s hull features MOL’s distinctive livery blending the group’s corporate blue — representing the ocean, with turquoise, which signifies its environmental commitments. The design is intended to reflect the MOL Group Mission: to sustain people’s lives and ensure a prosperous future from the blue oceans.
