MRS orders 30 Wabtec Evolution series locomotives

MRS Logística and Wabtec Corporation have entered into an agreement for the acquisition of 30 new Evolution Series locomotives. With a deal valued at approximately R$500 million, the first deliveries are scheduled for 2024. This investment is a pivotal component of MRS’s railway fleet renewal strategy and underscores the longstanding partnership of almost 30 years between the two companies.

Guilherme Segalla de Mello, president of MRS Logística, emphasises the significance of fleet renewal in enhancing efficiency and safety within the company.

“Transitioning to a modern locomotive fleet is essential for us to drive improvements in energy efficiency and safety in rail transport. Our aim is to contribute to the enhancement of our country’s logistics while minimising our environmental footprint. This procurement aligns with MRS’s regulatory commitments to the Federal Government, reflecting collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors. It not only enhances efficiency in intermodal transportation but also propels advancements in the railway industry,” he explains.

The ES44ACi locomotives boast advanced technology that aligns with the global trend towards sustainability. Designed to deliver emissions reductions compared to their predecessor, the AC4400, these locomotives utilise high-strength materials to extend diesel engine overhaul intervals, thereby reducing operating costs over their lifecycle.

Danilo Miyasato, president and regional leader of Wabtec Latin America, highlights the environmental benefits of these cutting-edge locomotives.

“These state-of-the-art ES44ACi locomotives offer superior performance, increased reliability, and reduced CO2 emissions,” Miyasato states. “This long-term contract underscores our commitment to fostering a greener railway network for Brazil.”

Launched in 2022, the ES44ACi model locomotives feature Evolution Series diesel engines, generating 4,500 horsepower with just 12 cylinders. Their electronic four-stroke internal combustion engine, coupled with turbocharging, enhances energy efficiency and lowers emissions through a design focused on combustion thermal efficiency and a double intake air cooling system.
