NYK Bulkship (Asia) Pte. Ltd., Golden Island Pte. Ltd., and Yara Clean Ammonia Norge AS have concluded a non-binding term sheet that paves the way for a tripartite partnership to jointly explore the marketing and supply of low-carbon ammonia as a marine fuel to maritime end-users in Singapore. The three parties began discussions in early 2024 and are aiming to commence operations within this decade.
Combining Expertise Across the Supply Chain
The partnership brings together complementary capabilities across shipping, bunkering, and ammonia production. NYK Line will contribute expertise gained through LNG bunkering operations, along with operational and technical experience from its ammonia carrier fleet and ammonia-fuelled vessel projects. Golden Island brings more than 40 years of experience in Singapore’s bunkering industry, including a broad customer base and strong scheduling capabilities critical to bunkering operations. Yara Clean Ammonia, one of the global leaders in the ammonia sector, contributes deep expertise in ammonia production and handling alongside a strong safety record.
A Strategic Hub for Global Decarbonisation
Singapore’s position as the world’s largest bunkering port — supplying approximately one-fifth of global marine fuel demand — makes it a natural starting point for scaling ammonia as a zero-or-near-zero-emission (ZNZ) marine fuel. The partnership aligns with Singapore’s broader ambitions to support the shipping community in meeting maritime decarbonisation targets, as well as with the International Maritime Organization’s long-term emissions reduction goals.
Ammonia is attracting growing attention as a marine fuel for the 2030s and beyond, given that it produces no CO₂ upon combustion, making it one of the more promising pathways to deep decarbonisation in the shipping sector.
Leadership Perspectives
Atsuya Nojiri, managing director of NYK Bulkship (Asia), said the NYK Group — which operates a fleet of more than 900 vessels, views the transition to zero-or-near-zero marine fuels as critical to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. “The NYK Group’s primary objective is to establish the infrastructure required to safely accelerate the adoption and scaling of ammonia-fuelled vessels, while taking a leading role through collaboration with experienced industry partners,” he said.
Johnny Tan, Managing Director of Golden Island, highlighted the company’s track record in supporting industry transitions, including the adoption of VLSFO, biofuels, methanol, and digital bunkering tools. “Through this partnership, we look forward to contributing our operational capabilities and high safety standards to support Singapore’s development as a global hub for next-generation marine fuels,” he said.
Murali Srinivasan, SVP Commercial at Yara Clean Ammonia, described the agreement as a milestone in building a last-mile ecosystem for low-carbon ammonia bunkering. “Singapore’s leadership in maritime decarbonisation makes it a natural starting point for scaling ammonia bunkering globally,” he said.
