OrbitMI to acquire AI Firm AuQub and appoints co-founder Alexandre Lapointe as CPO
OrbitMI has announced its agreement to acquire Quebec-based AuQub, an artificial intelligence (AI) company whose suite of AI-driven agents streamlines workflows and automates repetitive tasks to help businesses boost productivity through smarter, faster decision-making. The acquisition marks a strategic step in OrbitMI’s mission to drive intelligent, connected workflows across the maritime industry.
By integrating AuQub’s accessible SaaS technology into its platform, OrbitMI reinforces its commitment to delivering actionable insights that allow shipowners and operators to anticipate regulatory changes, optimise voyages in real time, and make more informed operational decisions at scale.
“Artificial intelligence is central to our mission of making maritime more intelligent,” said Ali Riaz, CEO of OrbitMI. “With AuQub’s technology and talent now part of OrbitMI, we’re accelerating our ability to turn data into insight and insight into action—across the entire maritime value chain.”
As part of the transaction, OrbitMI has appointed AuQub co-founder Alexandre Lapointe as its new chief product officer. In this role, Alexandre will define OrbitMI’s product strategy, lead the development roadmap, and oversee service integration.
Alexandre brings over 25 years of experience across transportation, energy, and software sectors, including senior maritime technology roles at Lloyd’s Register (LR), OneOcean Group, and Marine Press. At OneOcean, he served as both Chief Product Officer and CTO, developing a global perspective through work in regions such as Japan, the UK, Singapore, and China. During his tenure at Marine Press, he led the development of the Sea Tab platform, which earned the Microsoft IMPACT Innovation Award in 2018.
An engineer by background, Alexandre has more than three decades of experience in software development and digital transformation, with a decade in senior leadership roles focused on product integration and enterprise finance. He has also played a role in five mergers and acquisitions, one of which received the 2023 Mid-Sized Enterprise Sale of the Year award in London.
In addition to co-founding AuQub, Alexandre was a founder of 8thSea, further cementing his entrepreneurial credentials. Fluent in both French and English, his international experience spans the Americas, EMEA, and APAC—positioning him to lead OrbitMI’s global product strategy with a nuanced understanding of regional dynamics.
“I’m truly excited to join OrbitMI and contribute to its vision for a more intelligent and connected maritime industry,” said Lapointe. “Artificial intelligence has the power to transform how businesses operate, and I look forward to applying that potential in ways that deliver real value to our customers. It’s a privilege to work alongside a team so committed to innovation and impact.”
The acquisition of AuQub marks a significant milestone in OrbitMI’s ongoing effort to redefine digital transformation in maritime, making operations more efficient, safe, sustainable, and profitable.
