Port of Corpus Christi gets $7m TxDOT grants to improve Joe Fulton corridor

The Port of Corpus Christi is getting nearly $7 million from the state for safety improvements for the Joe Fulton International Trade Corridor and a road leading to the Rincon Industrial Complex.

The grant was awarded by the Texas Department of Transportation under the 2019-2020 Port Access Program, which is funded by the Texas Mobility Fund. It’s designed to improve safety and fluidity of roads around Texas seaports.

CEO Sean Strawbridge said: “The Rincon Road and Joe Fulton Corridor improvements continue to enhance our customers’ ability to move their goods to market safely and competitively.”

The transportation department approved $2.9 million for work on the corridor, and $3.8 million for the Rincon project.

The port, now the nation’s third largest port based on tonnage, has witnessed significant growth in recent years, much of it centered along the Corpus Christi Ship Channel Inner Harbour.

The additional foot traffic has spurred the need for a new frontage road south of the rail corridor that runs parallel to the Joe Fulton corridor to ensure vehicle safety and mobility.

The port opened the $55 million Joe Fulton trade corridor in 2011 –  that promised to add hundreds of acres and four miles of frontage for industrial development on the north side of the port’s inner harbour.

The 12-mile corridor also provides an alternate route for vehicles that have to travel over the Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge. It’s named for Joe R. Fulton, a former port commissioner and contractor whose decades of work shaped Corpus Christi’s iconic skyline.
