Port of Gothenburg handles highest-ever container volumes
The Port of Gothenburg recorded a new all-time high in 2025, handling 934,000 TEU*, driven by an expanding range of shipping services, congestion at major European ports, and strong rail connections linking the port with the rest of Sweden. The figure represents a 4 percent increase compared with the previous year and marks the highest annual container volume in the port’s history.
The record volumes highlight the port’s growing attractiveness as a logistics hub. Growth has been supported by a significant expansion in deep-sea shipping services, including two new direct routes to Asia. In addition, the port’s rail network, Railport Scandinavia, continues to develop as a unique and stable system providing efficient nationwide access to the port. Capacity challenges at several major European ports during the year have also contributed, while terminal operators at the Port of Gothenburg have been able to accommodate both existing and additional volumes.

Container volumes at the Port of Gothenburg are also increasing at a considerably faster rate than across Swedish ports as a whole.
Rail freight continues to grow – more than 60 percent of containers transported by rail
The Port of Gothenburg aims to maximise the share of cargo transported to and from the port by climate-friendly rail. In 2025, rail-borne container volumes increased by 5 percent to 529,000 TEU, setting another all-time record. The proportion of containers moved by rail now stands at just over 60 percent.
Growth in rail transport has been driven primarily by increased volumes on shuttle services to and from terminals in the Stockholm and Mälardalen regions, northern Sweden, as well as Småland and Västergötland. The port’s extensive service offering continues to support businesses across Sweden.
Ro-ro and automotive traffic
The Port of Gothenburg’s intra-European ro-ro traffic consists of rolling cargo transported on vessels with frequent departures to strategically important logistics hubs in Northern and Central Europe, as well as the United Kingdom. In 2025, the port handled 525,000 units, representing a marginal increase compared with the previous year.
The port is also the largest car port in the Nordic region, handling 251,000 vehicles during the year. After a 9 percent decline over the first three quarters compared with the same period in the previous year, volumes recovered strongly in the fourth quarter, resulting in a full-year decrease of 2 percent.
Energy products
The Port of Gothenburg is Sweden’s largest general energy port and plays a key role in the country’s energy supply. During 2025, the port handled 20.7 million tonnes of energy products. Volumes declined by 13 percent in the first half of the year compared with the same period in 2024, partly due to planned maintenance shutdowns. However, the segment also saw a recovery in the autumn, bringing the full-year decrease to 5 percent.
Passenger volumes and cruise calls
A total of 1.4 million passengers travelled to and from Gothenburg in 2025, representing a 1 percent increase compared with 2024. The number of cruise calls rose by 13 percent to 63 during the same period.
