Port of New Orleans container-on-barge service sets new record

In a landmark achievement, the Port of New Orleans recorded 20,500 container moves by barge during the calendar year 2023, marking the highest volume since the service’s inception in 2016. This accomplishment is the result of a robust partnership between Port NOLA, the Port of Greater Baton Rouge, and Ingram Marine Group, forming the largest container-on-barge network in the United States with vital connectivity to the nation’s heartland.

Sustainable Transportation Solutions

The container-on-barge service offers an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional truck transport, reducing air emissions significantly. It facilitates the movement of an average of 30,000 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units annually between New Orleans, the Port of Greater Baton Rouge, Memphis, and St. Louis.

Port NOLA president & CEO, Brandy D. Christian, expressed enthusiasm for expanding the service in the years ahead, underscoring the port’s commitment to innovative and sustainable solutions amidst global supply chain disruptions.

Environmental Impact and Collaborative Efforts

The service’s environmental benefits are substantial, with a reduction of over 1.3 million kg of carbon dioxide emissions and savings exceeding 130,000 gallons of diesel fuel in 2023 alone. Since its inception, the cumulative CO2 emissions reduction has surpassed 10.4 million kg.

Port NOLA, alongside its partners, recognises the importance of collaboration in offering this essential weekly service. The Port of Greater Baton Rouge and Ingram Marine Group echoed sentiments of pride in contributing to a stronger and more resilient supply chain.

Infrastructure Development and Federal Support

Port NOLA’s Louisiana International Terminal, currently in the design and permitting phase, will further enhance container-on-barge services. Equipped with state-of-the-art green technologies like shore power, LIT will significantly reduce vessel emissions and environmental impact.

Earlier this year, Port NOLA secured substantial federal funding totaling $300 million through the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America and MEGA Grant programs. Coupled with private industry partnerships and state support, this funding will facilitate the construction of LIT, driving economic growth and job creation in Louisiana.

With construction slated to commence in 2025 and the first berth opening in 2028, the Louisiana International Terminal heralds a new era of sustainable, efficient, and innovative maritime infrastructure, bolstering Port NOLA’s position as a premier international gateway on the Gulf Coast.
