QatarEnergy secures $6 Billion deal to build largest LNG vessels with China State Shipbuilding Corporation

QatarEnergy has sealed a deal with China State Shipbuilding Corporation to construct 18 of the largest LNG vessels ever built, a move that underscores its commitment to expanding its historic LNG fleet expansion programme. The agreement, valued at $6 billion, paves the way for the construction of ultra-modern QC-Max size LNG vessels, each boasting a capacity of 271,000 cubic metres.

These cutting-edge vessels will be built at China’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CSSC, and will feature state-of-the-art technological innovation and environmental performance.

The signing ceremony took place in Beijing, with His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the minister of state for energy affairs and president and CEO of QatarEnergy, leading the proceedings. Also in attendance were Mr. Chen Jianliang, chairman of Hudong‐Zhonghua Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., Mr. Li Hongtao, chairman of China Shipbuilding Trading Co. Ltd., senior executives from QatarEnergy and QatarEnergy LNG, and a delegation of senior Chinese government officials, including Qatar’s Ambassador in China, Mr. Mohamed Abdullah Al-Dehaimi.

H.E. Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi commented on the significance of the agreement, stating, “With a total value of almost 6 billion dollars for these ultra-modern, largest ever LNG vessels by size, the agreement we signed today is the industry’s largest single shipbuilding contract ever.” He also reaffirmed QatarEnergy’s commitment to delivering safe and reliable LNG while prioritising environmental sustainability.
