Railport Kędzierzyn-Koźle expands rail logistics for steel and metals
The Kędzierzyn-Koźle railport is located in the Opole Voivodeship in southern Poland and forms part of the Sławięcice HUB. The site sits within the catchment area of the German-Polish border and the industrial centres in Silesia.
The infrastructure includes the DB Cargo Spedkol siding with a total length of around 50 kilometres and access to a truck weighbridge. The site is connected to the international rail network via the track in Sławięcice, giving the railport the prerequisites for combined rail and road transport with end-to-end process control.
Steel Coils in Regular Traffic “Silesia”
One focus of current handling at the railport is on steel coils sourced from various European steelworks. Shipments are transported on the regular “Silesia” train service, which runs from the Polish-German border to the railway port of Kędzierzyn-Koźle. Upon arrival, the coils are unloaded and stored in the warehouse, with current stock amounting to around 2,500 tonnes. Once a customer order has been received, the site organises loading onto lorries and distribution to end customers. Transport and storage processes are fully coordinated on site.
Copper Coils with Intermediate Storage
Copper coils are delivered to the railport by road transport, unloaded and temporarily stored in the hall. The goods remain in the warehouse until a transport order is received from the customer, at which point they are dispatched and forwarded accordingly.
Flat Products and Profiles
Flat sheet metal and profiles also form part of the railport’s current portfolio. They are delivered by lorry and stored in the site’s warehouses, from where they are distributed to end customers by road transport.
Integration into the TEN-T Network
The railport is connected to the TEN-T network via the track in Sławięcice. TEN-T — the Trans-European Transport Network — refers to the European Union’s framework of cross-border transport infrastructure, defining core corridors that link Europe’s central industrial and economic areas and are prioritised for infrastructure development. The hub maintains regular connections to Silesia and to Southern and Western Europe via freight trains operated by DB Cargo, integrating the location into cross-border transport chains.
Supplementary Services
The range of services at the railport also includes a mobile wagon service as part of vehicle maintenance, supporting operational processes in rail freight transport and helping to reduce downtimes. Sustainable rail transport is likewise a relevant consideration at the site. The Green Railway certificate documents the use of environmentally friendly rail logistics, a distinction that is becoming increasingly important, particularly in industrial environments.
Operational Function in German-Polish Freight Transport
By virtue of its location between the border and the Silesian industrial area, the Kędzierzyn-Koźle railport fulfils an operational interface function in German-Polish freight transport. Regular transports from the border area are combined with warehousing and regional distribution on site. The combination of a regular train concept, hall capacity, extensive track infrastructure and TEN-T connectivity creates stable framework conditions for continuous steel and metal flows within cross-border transport chains.
