RBP and RAILPOOL signed a full-service rental agreement for a total of five Modula hybrid shunting locomotives

Rheinische Bahnpersonal- und Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH signed one of the first full-service leasing contracts with RAILPOOL for five cutting-edge Modula hybrid shunting locomotives. These locomotives, consisting of both BDD and EDD versions, will enhance RBP’s rail transport capabilities in the near future.

Scheduled for delivery from Q3/2026 and operational until mid-2027, RBP’s adoption of this pioneering technology highlights its commitment to embracing flexible energy sources, energy recovery, and modern ergonomic designs for train drivers. By integrating load-dependent diesel engines and the capability to utilize overhead line power, the EDD variant ensures substantial CO2 reductions and energy efficiency while meeting the latest European Train Control System standards and featuring radio remote control upon delivery. With the BDD delivering 1,000 kW and the EDD variant providing 2.5 MW under overhead line power and 1,000 kW in diesel mode, these locomotives boast versatility in traversing tight curve radii in sidings as narrow as 75 metres.

Thomas Schön, managing director and shareholder of RBP, expressed confidence in the Modula platform, stating, “Our customers increasingly seek solutions facilitating seamless rail transportation from origin to destination with a single traction option. This simplifies rail operations, enhances reliability, and eliminates risks associated with interfaces between different providers. The Modula platform aligns perfectly with these requirements, offering comprehensive full-service support from RAILPOOL, guaranteeing availability, and streamlining vehicle management administration. Moreover, it provides our train drivers with a modern and comfortable workspace they can take pride in.”

Volkmar Günther, head of sales at RAILPOOL, echoed Schön’s sentiments, emphasising the significance of the partnership’s expansion. “We are delighted to further strengthen our collaboration with RBP by providing them and their customers with state-of-the-art hybrid shunting locomotives equipped with the Modula platform. These locomotives will not only enhance reliability and simplify rail operations but also contribute significantly to CO2 emissions reduction. By setting higher standards in full-service support for shunting locomotives, we aim to elevate rail transport as a mode of choice for sustainable mobility,” Günther remarked.
